How Scouting inspires interest in Space Exploration.

Space agencies like NASA and Scouting have a long history together. Have you noticed that over two-thirds of (US) astronauts have been involved in scouting? Or have you heard about the Chamboree 2022 in Cheshire, United Kingdom has a program full of activities inspired by space exploration! To get a better understanding of the relationship between these two topics, we've invited guests from different sectors such as education, scouting and space to discuss on the topics of education, youth programs and how Scouting inspires interest in Space Exploration.

Topic of focus/discussion includes:

  • How important are Youth programs and education? And how important is it for it to be endorsed by a government or other official body.

  • Establish an understanding of what Scouting is and what kind of benefits does it offer to the younger generation.

  • What is currently being offered and done by both scouting and space organisations.

  • What do the panellist think of these and what do they believe is being done well or could be improved upon, and general views on topics covered.

The purpose of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national and international communities.

- ScoutWA

Youth programs goals are to promote the positive in young people, including competency-building skills, social skills, life skills, academic improvement, motivation, community involvement, etc.

- Roots of Action

Human space exploration helps to address fundamental questions about our place in the Universe and the history of our solar system. Through addressing the challenges related to human space exploration we expand technology, create new industries, and help to foster a peaceful connection with other nations.

Growing up Scouting has always been a big part of my life. The hardship, training and the memories that I've shared with my mentors and friends have given me a gift of a lifetime. The gift of the capability to be more than myself, to see beyond myself and the desire to strive for the better (in the most creative way).

Seeing the parallels between the space industry and what scouting aims to develop in people inspired me to create this event.

When I was 16, I changed the period of Uranus' satellite into music with help from NARIT (National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand) and my lovely physics teacher. When I was 17, I dropped out of school because I lost faith in the education system of my country and started working as a writer about space.

I never got the concept of the scouts until Julia told me about how scouting works on the global scale and why most scouts become astronauts. I want to learn more about scouting and I want to make it useful for all the younger generations in my country.
